I DO NOT MATTER has been a deeply rooted feeling inherited from my mom and from her mom and from my great grandmother and I am sure we can go on and on. My mom belongs to the children of the war generation. She was four years old when the bombs fell on Warsaw on the 1st of September 1939. She was nine years old when she stood at the grave of her older sister. Her mom – my grandmother stood there frozen, unable to cry, unable to say a word. My told me that she was pulling my grandma hand asking her to start crying but my grandma just stood there and looked. I can only imagine how invisible and unimportant my mom must have felt. Her sister was killed, she had no clue what to do, how to process what happened but there was no one there to help her, to show her, to give her an example.
